Recorded in Woodstock and Cape Cod and produced by Forbert along with John Simon (who helmed Forbert\u2019s breakthrough sophomore album, 1979\u2019s\u00a0<em>Jackrabbit Slim<\/em>),\u00a0<em>Compromised\u00a0<\/em>is anything but what its title suggests. Its aggressive, roots-rock stylings are reminiscent of Forbert\u2019s 1992 album\u00a0<em>The American in Me<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From the rambling piano and horn-driven swing in \u201cBig Comeuppance\u201d to the seductive twang in \u201cDevil (Here She Comes Now)\u201d to the ironic romanticizing of Altamont in \u201cWelcome the Rolling Stones,\u201d Forbert has followed his muse to the hilt. \u201cIt\u2019s all about the songs,\u201d Forbert acknowledges, \u201cand the songs are about the inspiration. For me, if you have the inspiration, then you have to make the commitment to getting the song as good as you know it should be. Then making an album\u2014a finished product\u2014is your next challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Compromised\u00a0<\/em>collaborators include bassist Joey Spampinato (NRBQ), drummer Lou Cataldo (The Freeze), pianist\/trumpeter Kami Lyle, and keyboardist Robbie Kondor, the latter of whom played on Forbert\u2019s classic 1978 debut,\u00a0<em>Alive on Arrival<\/em>. \u201cI recorded with the band that did the\u00a0<em>Arrival\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Jackrabbit\u00a0<\/em>anniversary tours with me in 2013 and 2014,\u201d Forbert says, \u201cwhere we played those albums in their entireties. It just seemed natural to say, \u2018Okay, we\u2019re going to rehearse for this tour \u2014 but let\u2019s record an album together, too.\u2019\u00a0 And it was great reconnecting with John Simon again after all this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Compromised\u00a0<\/em>seems to be a fairly ironic title, given the nature of its contents. \u201cIf people ask me why it\u2019s called\u00a0<em>Compromised<\/em>, well, that\u2019s the first song on the record, and it\u2019s pretty true to my style,\u201d Forbert admits. \u201cBut to put it simply, I\u2019ve been dealing with the changes we\u2019ve all been going through and what we live with in life today. Clearly, we\u2019re going through something new because of the digital revolution. We have so much intensity in the air now \u2014 that clich\u00e9 of too much information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In today\u2019s overload-of-information age, Forbert recognizes the value of having a \u201ccalling card\u201d song in his arsenal \u2014 \u201cRomeo\u2019s Tune,\u201d his indelible pop hit that reached #11 on the\u00a0<em>Billboard\u00a0<\/em>Hot 100 in 1980. \u201cThat song took on a life of its own,\u201d he says. \u201cDid I become a household name? No. But you write the songs, and you record the songs. As long as you have the inspiration, you keep on going.\u201d A testament to his songwriting prowess, Forbert\u2019s songs have been recorded by several artists, such as Keith Urban, Marty Stuart, and Rosanne Cash.\u00a0 His 2002 tribute album to Jimmie Rodgers (entitled\u00a0<em>Any Old Time<\/em>) was nominated for a Grammy in the best traditional folk category in 2004.
