It has been said that you can\u2019t get to courage without walking through vulnerability. Southern rock Nashville-based singer-songwriter Bari Leigh embodies this maxim to the hilt. The constant throughout her empowering journey is her emotional authenticity in knowing when to be tough and when to be tender. These extremes are harmoniously reflected on her\u00a0fierce and compelling release,\u00a0Honey & Gravel<\/em>, out April 28, 2017 (Starfish Music).<\/p>\n

Bari\u2019s dynamic and warmly organic sensibility encompasses Southern-fried riff rock, Motown, country, classic soul, blues, and R&B. \u00a0She proudly embraces the tradition of brazen female vocalists who shattered paradigms and left a trail of broken hearts. Surrounded by powerful women, Leigh studied the work of the iconic female artists who came before her, citing Janis Joplin, Bobbie Gentry, Patsy Cline and Etta James as her biggest influences.<\/p>\n

Bari\u2019s previous releases (The EP<\/em>\u00a0in 2010 and\u00a0Tonight, I’m Unchained\u00a0<\/em>in 2014) have garnered acclaim from\u00a0Nashville Lifestyles Magazine<\/em>,\u00a0The Examiner<\/em>,\u00a0The Tennessean<\/em>,\u00a0Justine Magazine<\/em>\u00a0(\u201cstrong and soulful\u2026 [a] powerhouse voice with a twang\u00a0[that]\u00a0gives us chills\u201d) and\u00a0The Boot<\/em>, as well as being embraced by international and college radio, among other taste-making outlets. In addition, she has been featured on CBS\u2019s \u201cEntertainment Tonight,\u201d \u201cVoice of America: Border Crossings,\u201d and Oxygen’s \u201cBad Girls Club\u201d to name a few.<\/p>\n

There is dualism coursing through Bari\u2019s spirit. Her lyrics range from tender, soulful emotionality to bad girl mischievousness and her singing spans smooth-as-butter sensuality to raucous, swamp-rock swagger. Her third album\u2019s title,\u00a0Honey & Gravel<\/em>, perfectly captures this wonderfully paradoxical disposition. The six-song album (plus a bonus cut if you purchase via iTunes) is a triumphant salvo after a physically, emotionally, and spiritually depleting time.<\/p>\n

In the summer of 2015, Bari contracted Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever after being bitten by a tick while hiking during a two-day break from a 350-date tour. Back on the road, she began to feel ill, suffering from extreme pain, intense fever, sudden blindness and acute loss of strength. Repercussions from the illness would span a difficult year and a half and Bari decided to write, record and co-produce\u00a0Honey & Gravel<\/em>\u00a0as she recovered.<\/p>\n

The title\u00a0Honey & Gravel<\/em>\u00a0refers to an affectionate nickname given to Leigh by an industry colleague, as she can be both a sweetheart and a certified badass. On the gravel side of things is the pastoral acoustic\u00a0pop of \u201cWhat\u2019s Left\u201d and the recklessly fun country rocker \u201cPreachin\u2019 To The Choir.\u201d The former track is a feminine anthem\u00a0of not letting a lover get the best of you: \u201cI\u2019ll light one up and toughen up,\u201d while the swaggering \u201cPreachin\u2019 To The Choir\u201d represents Bari’s independent spirit and feisty\u00a0nature: \u201cI\u2019m as torn as the holes in my jeans, there ain\u2019t enough water to wash these hands clean.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cParsons\u201d and \u201c\u2019Cuz\u00a0It\u2019s Broken\u201d are vulnerable moments where Bari exposes her softer side. The dreamy \u201cParsons\u201d snapshots a painful image of an ex sending his best friend to pick up his clothes from her\u00a0front porch, each line written as it was occurring. Accompanied by eerie, haunting guitars, Bari sings \u201cCuz It\u2019s Broken\u201d with seething soulfulness as she proclaims, \u201cyou were a perfect mistake, but I promise, honey you won\u2019t be mine.\u201d<\/p>\n

In exploring the duality inherent in\u00a0Honey & Gravel<\/em>, Bari learned a profound lesson in optimism. \u201cCreating this music helped me truly find myself.\u201d She concludes: \u201cIf you keep your head held high and your boots on the ground, you can find light in the darkest times.\u201d<\/p>\n
