Salim Nourallah track \u201cTucumcari\u201d premieres at\u00a0Mxdwn\u00a0<\/em>today<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n All 21 tracks from double-album to be unveiled in order online prior to album release via weekday premiere series<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Nourallah to tour in Texas in October<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Respected Dallas, TX-based singer\/songwriter\/producer\/musician-of-many-trades Salim Nourallah is set to release a sprawling double-album,\u00a0Somewhere South of Sane<\/em>, on September 28, 2018 on Palo Santo Records.\u00a0 His seventh solo album, it is Nourallah\u2019s boldest work yet, exploring the desolation of peace in America (\u201cRelief\u201d), the implosion of a marriage (\u201cA Betrayal\u201d), madness of a life lived among the record stacks (\u201cBoy in a Record Shop\u201d), and is nothing short of a musical odyssey.\u00a0 The main radio single from the album, \u201cTucumcari\u201d (which also appears on his EP,\u00a0South<\/em>)\u00a0premieres today at\u00a0<\/a>Mxdwn<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 (The video for \u201cTucumcari\u201d will be premiering on August 23, 2018 at\u00a0Innocent Words<\/a><\/em>.)<\/p>\n To introduce each track from the album prior to the release date, Nourallah has a \u201csong a day\u201d premiere series planned, set to run for the 21 weekdays leading up the album release date.\u00a0 For this series, Nourallah has partnered up with a slew of premiere outlets large and small (including\u00a0Mxdwn<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0Atwood Magazine<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0Blast Echo<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0Independent Clauses<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0Blue Ridge Outdoors<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0Vents Magazine<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0East of 8th<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0AXS.com<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0GhettoBlaster<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0Magnet Magazine<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0Imperfect Fifth<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0PopMatters<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0Ghost of Blind Lemon<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0Glide Magazine<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0Ground Sounds<\/a><\/em>, and others), and each track from the album will be unveiled in order, starting on August 29th.\u00a0 Nourallah will be posting about each song and premiere on socials on the premiere date as a way of rolling out the album, song-by-song, in the order the tracks appear on the double-record.<\/p>\n \u201cThis record has been different for me in a lot of respects – not just the obvious one, it being my first double album,\u201d Nourallah says.\u00a0 \u201cThe waiting period between completion and release of an album is usually excruciating for most musicians. I’ve experienced it many times, but this is the first time I’ve actually enjoyed the process. Especially in the face of the unlikely event that you will ever see much or any monetary compensation.\u201d<\/p>\n Nourallah, who is equal parts songwriter and producer, creates a shifting sonic landscape that could easily be mistaken for the work of multiple artists. From the gorgeous trance-inducing psychedelia of the opener \u201cBoy in a Record Shop,\u201d to the gut-wrenching self-realization in \u201cI Missed My Own Life,\u201d to the dueling Lennon\/McCartney lyrical\/melodic axis on display in \u201cTucumcari,\u201d and the Nick Drake-esque \u201cMoving Man,\u201d\u00a0Somewhere South of Sane<\/em>\u00a0traverses more artistic landscape in one album that some artists could in an entire career.<\/p>\n In the tradition of nakedly stark, confessional songwriters like John Lennon and Bob Dylan, Nourallah makes no bones about confronting his inner demons on\u00a0Somewhere South of Sane<\/em>. \u201cWhen I was a kid, I was struck by the violence, greed and insanity of the \u2018grownup\u2019 world,\u201d he says, \u201cand the only way I found I could deal with it was music. \nRecorded and mixed mostly at Salim Nourallah\u2019s Pleasantry Lane Studio in Dallas, the self-produced album is an honest, often brutal introspective exercise that is relatable, heartbreaking, and amusing all at the same time. With the two-fisted melancholy of John Lennon and the elegant bluntness of Neil Finn,\u00a0Somewhere South of Sane<\/em>\u00a0elevates Nourallah to the apex of his art, trading rock riffs for a classical guitar and assisted by the mind-bending instrumentation of guitarist Nick Earl, Nourallah\u2019s bandmate in the Travoltas and a musician he calls a \u201ctotal freak genius.\u201d Nourallah further explains: \u201cHe has this ability to create worlds. Music is very visual to me, and I\u2019ve always seen music in colors. Each of these songs has a sonic world, and Nick is responsible for that because he doesn\u2019t play conventional guitar.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nIn advance of the album, Nourallah is in the midst of releasing four pre-album \u201cbundles\u201d that include tracks from the album as well as bonus material: previously recorded but unreleased songs or acoustic re-imaginings of tracks from past Nourallah albums.\u00a0 Each bundle (EP) is accompanied by new online video content.\u00a0 Already released bundle one,\u00a0North\u00a0<\/em>(out June 1, 2018), bundle two,\u00a0West\u00a0<\/em>(out June 29, 2018), and bundle three,\u00a0East\u00a0<\/em>(out July 27, 2018) precede bundle four,\u00a0South<\/em>, which comes out on September 7, 2018. The four EPs give fans a sneak peek into what is in store for them on\u00a0Somewhere South of Sane<\/em>.<\/p>\n
\nAs a solo artist, Nourallah has long mined the terrain between catchy and devastating. After gaining initial acclaim with the Denton, TX-based Nourallah Brothers, he went on to release six solo albums. His debut,\u00a0Polaroid\u00a0<\/em>(2004), had\u00a0Rolling Stone<\/em>\u00a0calling him \u201ca singer-songwriter who can stop time.\u201d 2015\u2019s\u00a0Skeleton Closet<\/em>\u00a0was cited by\u00a0Dusted\u00a0<\/em>as a \u201cmasterful balance of the said and the unsaid… like a good novel, full of implications and shadowy contradictions and complexities.\u201d As a producer, Nourallah boasts quite an impressive C.V. of production credits (Old 97\u2019s, the Damnwells, Rhett Miller, the Deathray Davies). He\u2019s also been involved in numerous other projects, including co-founding and running A & R for the Palo Santo music group. Over the years, his work on both sides of the sound booth has won him an armful of\u00a0Dallas Observer<\/em>\u00a0music awards. That, and the consistent quality of Salim Nourallah\u2019s music, have proven that some musicians actually can continue to stay relevant.<\/p>\n
