Caleb Hawley to release Side 2<\/em> on September 9, 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n

Harlem’s Caleb Hawley is an American soul singer, songwriter and performer. Like\u00a0savvy throwback crooners Mayer Hawthorne and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Hawley channels early Stevie Wonder and other Motown sounds into a complete, magnetic package.<\/p>\n

Raised in Minneapolis by a family of preachers and therapists, Hawley\u2019s family fueled\u00a0his on-stage charisma and perceptive, witty lyrics.\u00a0\u201cGrowing up in an a capella church, we\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0have instruments. It forced everyone to learn how to sing harmony,\u201d Hawley says.\u00a0\u201cWe mostly sang older hymns, which is probably what drew me to gospel and eventually soul music.\u201d\u00a0Hawley’s\u00a0grandfather hooked him on an early Ray Charles record, leading him into the fertile soul music of the \u201960s and \u201970s.<\/p>\n

Hawley spent his early 20s touring the country with only an acoustic guitar and his dog, Fargo.\u00a0\u201cThere’s no place I’d rather be than on a stage in front of people wanting to hear music I’ve created,\u201d Hawley says.\u00a0In those years, Hawley racked up hundreds of gigs, along with multiple songwriting awards for the\u00a0John Lennon Songwriting Contest,\u00a0Telluride Troubadour Competition, SongCircle Contest, and more.<\/p>\n

Now a talented full band multiplies that energy across the country. \u201cI used to love listening rooms,\u201d Hawley admits, “but now I pretty much just wanna get a party started.\u201d\u00a0Music Without Labels<\/em> agrees, calling the stocked setup,\u00a0\u201ca fantastic show, full of danceable riffs and singalong choruses all held together by Hawley\u2019s tremendous charisma.\u201d\u00a0The Chicagoist<\/em> says, \u201cThe New York-based musician has a flair for soulful songwriting and a voice that will blow your hair back.\u201d<\/p>\n

2014 marks the release of a pair of EPs:\u00a0Side 1<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Side 2<\/em>. Hawley says, \u201cThey are a bit different stylistically, but each share my own voice artistically and literally.\u201d<\/p>\n

Side 1<\/em>\u00a0is a time capsule from the \u201960s, employing a full string section from the NY Philharmonic to capture the authentic R&B sounds of the \u201960s and \u201970s.\u00a0Side 2<\/em>\u00a0brings us to the present with beefier beats and more modern production. Hawley\u2019s\u00a0vocal swagger, his old Alabama garage-found Harmony electric guitar, and live rhythm section tie the EPs together.\u00a0Lucius drummer and producer Dan Molad co-produced both with Hawley.<\/p>\n

Side 1<\/em>\u00a0enjoyed a January 2014 debut, and\u00a0Side 2<\/em>\u00a0is set for a Fall 2014 release (September 9, 2014).<\/p>\n
