DANIEL KIRKPATRICK AND THE BAYONETS TO RELEASE ALBUM IN AUGUST

Seattle, WA-based trio Daniel Kirkpatrick and The Bayonets is set to release its album, Alibis, on August 20, 2013, via Rock Ridge Music (with distribution through ADA).  “Calling the album Alibis stems from the fact that I looked for every reason to run away and not pursue this dream,” says Kirkpatrick.  “Music felt like an uphill battle because I hadn’t found myself as a songwriter. With this record, I’ve finally conveyed what I needed to put forth.”

The trio’s debut is an authentic album of prime modern-vintage rock, rife with emotionally direct lyrics, tightly-arranged classic songwriting in the mold of 1960s British and American rock ‘n’ roll, with expansive dynamics and sensual guitar solos. Kirkpatrick is an introspective writer artfully grounded with his wordcraft.

A budding blues-inspired guitarist in high school, Kirkpatrick went on to explore abstract indie-pop, and after his indie band folded, he took a 9-to-5 job.  “I started thinking: ‘If I was in a band again, I’d do something like Roy Orbison or Elvis Costello,’” Kirkpatrick recalls. Thus began Daniel Kirkpatrick and The Bayonets.

The band features Kirkpatrick (vocals, guitar), Jordan Cassidy (bass, vocals), and Spencer Booth (drums, vocals). Both sidemen were former music associates handpicked to be Bayonets. Cassidy is from Kirkpatrick’s indie band, and Booth has a storied history with Kirkpatrick. As a 13-year-old musical prodigy, Booth sat in with Kirkpatrick’s high school classic rock band on keyboards, playing The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” with a spirited elegance that belied his teenage years. But by the time Kirkpatrick tapped him to play drums for The Bayonets, Booth was recovering from a period of drug and alcohol abuse.  The Bayonets became a shot at artistic redemption for Booth, and a second chance opportunity for Kirkpatrick in rediscovering his muse.

Daniel Kirkpatrick and The Bayonets are planning a listening party on August 17, 2013, at Fred’s Wildlife Refuge in Seattle, WA, and live shows are also being set in support of the forthcoming album, with the following dates already confirmed:

Daniel Kirkpatrick and The Bayonets Tour Schedule:

July 27th – Castle Rock, WA / Johnston Ridge Amphitheatre

August 3rd  – Portland, OR / Doug Fir Lounge

September 6th – Los Angeles, CA / Hotel Café

September 13th – Naches, WA / Chinook Fest

Stewart Eastham to release new album in September

STEWART EASTHAM TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM IN SEPTEMBER

The Man I Once Was Explores The Many Facets Of Americana

Singer-songwriter Stewart Eastham is set to release his debut solo album, The Man I Once Was, on September 24, 2013 via Long Bar Music.  Eastham’s first record since fronting country-rock band Day of the Outlaw captures some of his most honest and personal lyricism to date, especially moments like “Idyllwild, CA,” “Crawl Up In Your Bottle,” “It’s Understood,” and “The Lights of Tennessee.” Since The Man I Once Was is so deeply rooted in his own first-hand experience, the songs often take on the feel of a diary spanning an incredibly transformative time in his life.

After a lifetime on the West Coast, Eastham recently found himself at both a personal and artistic crossroads.  He found respite from the darkness of his final L.A. years in the change of pace and peace of mind he discovered in Nashville.  “It’s my ‘L.A. to Nashville’ album,” explains Eastham. “As the song ‘Born In California’ exemplifies, my life has always been based around a series of dichotomies:  city vs. country, intellectualism vs. street smarts, freedom vs. security.  With the move to Nashville, that dichotomy became literal, snaking its way through many of my songs as well as determining the album’s title and cover art.”

For The Man I Once Was, Eastham teamed up with producer (and former bandmate) Burke Ericson.  Ironically, he traveled back to Los Angeles to record this album using a group of incredibly talented musicians he’d met during his tenure there, including bassist Ted Russell Kamp and pedal steel player extraordinaire John McClung.

“Through the course of production, Burke ended up building a studio in his house which afforded us the opportunity to really hone the specific sound we wanted for this album,” says Eastham.  “We talked a lot about the early Neil Young records where he had big, funky drums over country-tinged songs.  Burke has such a great ear and I really trust him.   He understands me as a songwriter and always made my ideas better.”

Eastham’s songs span the breadth of the Americana realm:  from the old school country sounds of “The Lights of Tennessee” and “Livin’ With Bad Decisions,” to the funky southern rock of “Broken Hearted Lovers” and “Crawl Up In Your Bottle,” to the lush, layered arrangements of “It’s Understood” and title track “The Man I Once Was.”   Eastham is both a prolific and poetic writer with a deep love of storytelling, honed not only through music but also via a deep passion for literature and art films (and their less “noble” counterparts: genre fiction and genre movies.)

Eastham was born and raised in the Butte County region of rural Northern California.  He grew up on the sounds of classic country, outlaw country, and California country.  (Merle Haggard is a constant inspiration.)  This was supplemented with a love of rock ‘n’ roll, as well as appreciation for hip-hop and heavy metal.  During his first year at UC Davis, Eastham answered a music store ad place by a satirical thrash metal band looking for a drummer.  After graduating with a degree in Computer Engineering, Eastham switched gears and moved to Los Angeles to attend film school.  There he developed his skills as a storyteller through writing, directing, and acting in films, while continuing to play music as a drummer.  He also became an acolyte of country music—starting back with guys like Hank Sr., Jimmie Rodgers, and Lefty Frizzell, and then working his way up to the country-flavored singer/songwriters of the ’70s like John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Mickey Newbury, and Terry Allen.  After playing drums for a few years in the Los Angeles outfit Minibike, the band morphed to the point where Eastham was the frontman.   Minibike transformed into Day of the Outlaw, which released two albums: 2009’s Black Mountain Majesty and 2012’s The Retribution Waltz.

Eastham plans to tour soon in support of The Man I Once Was.

Aaron & The Spell To Perform at WXPN’s XPoNential Music Festival

Artist Signs With Rock Ridge Music For Management and Label Deal

Philadelphia, PA-based Aaron & The Spell is set to perform at WXPN’s XPoNential Music Festival (http://xpn.org/xponential-music-festival) on Friday, July 26, 2013, on the Wiggins Park Stage.  Also performing at this year’s festival are such acts as The Lumineers, Dr. Dog, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Brett Dennen, John Butler Trio, Justin Townes Earle, and Dawes, among many others.  Bruce Warren of WXPN (from NPR Music, 10 Artists You Should Have Known) raves: “Singer-songwriter Aaron Brown is an exciting new name to add to the lineage of the city’s expressive and emotionally intense soul singers.”  Says WXPN’s The Key blog:  “Philly artists Aaron & The Spell make soul music in a refreshing way, reminiscent of the great artists of the 60s and 70s.  It’s powerful stuff.”

Aaron Brown of Aaron & The Spell is excited about the opportunity to play the festival, saying:  “Everyone at WXPN has been tremendous in their support of my music, especially Helen Leicht. Through WXPN, I’ve been able to play some amazing shows such as the Philadelphia Folk Fest, the Porch at 30th Street Station, and, the one I’m most excited about, the upcoming XPoNential Festival, alongside of some of the greatest bands and artists out there. I feel very lucky and thankful for all their support.”

Aaron & The Spell recently inked a deal with Newark, NJ-based Rock Ridge Music, who will be providing management services as well as a label home.  Plans for a release of Aaron & The Spell’s Sing on September 10, 2013, are in place, and Brown is already busy writing for the next album, which is slated to be recorded in the spring of 2014.  Says Brown about his new management and label partner:  “I am very excited about working with Rock Ridge. All of the folks there are very knowledgeable, hardworking, and, above everything else, they are great people. With Rock Ridge in my corner, I really feel the sky is the limit.”

Aaron Brown’s bold sensitivity as a vocalist and a songwriter has garnered him favorable comparisons to Amos Lee, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, and Ben Harper.  He draws from a refreshingly eclectic blend of blues, folk, rock ’n’ roll, his hometown’s distinguished heritage of soul, and, more recently, indie rock. Performing as Aaron & The Spell, his captivating solo acoustic performances and incendiary full-band outings have helped him build an impressive profile among audiences and critics alike.

Aaron & The Spell’s debut, Sing, includes a stunning mix of honeyed ballads and simmering soul. The album was written during an emotionally raw time when Brown’s previous band broke up, his longtime relationship unraveled, and he moved to a new town. He took solace in crafting Sing and there is a soulful catharsis to songs like “Don’t Cry,” which has been played regularly on WXPN, and “A Beating Heart,” which recently won the Independent Music Award in the Adult Contemporary Song category.  Brown has also been nominated for a Tri State Indie Music Award, named “Artist to Watch” in 2013 by Ticket Magazine/Montgomery Media, and listed as one of the “10 Artists You Should Have Known In 2012” on NPR Music.

Award-winning singer-songwriter Christa Wells to release new album in August

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 11, 2013

AWARD-WINNING SINGER-SONGWRITER CHRISTA WELLS TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM IN AUGUST

Raleigh, NC-based singer-songwriter Christa Wells is set to release her next album, Feed Your Soul, on August 13, 2013.  Feed Your Soul was recorded at Zodlounge Music in Nashville.  The album represents a departure from her past records:  from the title track’s horn lines to the driving kick drum and rhythmic hits on “The Way That You Love Me,” it’s a bigger, sassier record.

Feed Your Soul—which is full of Wells’ trademark honest, piano-driven pop songs about family, home, grief, and hope—explores a sub-theme of giving and receiving love. For this project, the award-winning performer received plenty of love from her fans: a successful Kickstarter campaign raised over $15,000 to cover recording expenses. Despite the outpouring of support, Wells found the process terrifying. About the campaign, she says, “You feel so vulnerable and exposed and indebted and needy.” The experience influenced her writing. On “Being Loved,” for example, Wells sings:  Being loved is a hard thing to take / I will try, I will try, while the song’s cinematic bridge conveys vulnerability: We are born unclothed / As we came, we will go.

Prior to Feed Your Soul, Wells recorded one solo album and two EPs (Frame the Clouds, Before the Tree Comes Down, How Emptiness Sings) and collaborated on several other projects. In spring of 2013, Wells and fellow songwriter Nicole Witt released an album of folk-inspired music under the band name More Than Rubies. Wells’ 2011 EP How Emptiness Sings received excellent reviews. New Release Tuesday called it “one of the most captivating albums I’ve ever heard.”

The path to her present success was non-traditional. Instead of spending her twenties networking and performing at showcases, Wells married early, started a family, and moved away from Nashville to Raleigh, NC. Motherhood, performance anxiety, and advice from veteran songwriter Dwight Liles led her to focus on her writing. In 2006, Wells was named Songwriter of the Year by the Gospel Music Association for Natalie Grant’s recording of “Held,” a heartbreaking and inspirational song about the loss of a baby boy.

In 2009, Wells returned to the stage, overcoming her performance anxiety along the way. Since then, she has performed upwards of fifty dates a year, frequently with collaborator Nicole Witt. Wells has also written for and with recording artists Point of Grace, Plumb, Selah, Sara Groves, Nicol Sponberg, and Jessica Campbell. “Day by Day,” a song Wells co-wrote with Plumb, was recorded by Point of Grace and reached #1 on the Contemporary Christian Market charts.  Additionally, a song of Christa’s recorded by Plumb, “Need You Now (How Many Times),” has been on the Billboard Christian Overall Airplay chart for over a year, with a remix of the song released to dance radio in June 2013 already at #27 on the Billboard Club chart.

TRANSITSHOP TO RELEASE ALBUM IN AUGUST

Philadelphia, PA-based trio Transitshop is set to release its debut album, Velocity, on August 13, 2013 via Rock Ridge Music.  The lushly epic alternative/indie-pop is an infectiously catchy hybrid of classic 1980s new wave transcendence and potent modern pop-punk dynamics.  Through online networking, the band met Detroit-based producer Matt Dalton (Chiodos, I See Stars, These Hearts, Attila, For The Fallen Dreams, Stephen Christian), who helped streamline song arrangements and find otherworldly guitar tones. Velocity was partly recorded with Dalton at 37 Studios in Detroit and at Thermal Productions in New Jersey with Stephen McKnight.

The shimmering guitars, richly longing vocals, and urgently powerful rhythms on Velocity make it a passionate and captivating debut. The gorgeous “Life Goes On” bursts forth with airy keyboards, liquid guitars, heart exploding drums, and sweet and luxuriously pining vocals reminiscent of Morrissey. But unlike the melancholic Smiths leader, Transitshop vocalist/guitarist Chris O’Brien brings an unflinchingly upbeat message. “That song is about life throwing curveballs, and figuring out how to deal things that are out of your control,” he says.

O’Brien first started playing guitar at the age of 12 and went on to develop his skills as a rock lead guitarist.  Primarily focusing on distorted tones and complex solos in bands led by others, he found himself sidelined with a shoulder injury in 2009 that hindered his lead guitar ability.  After a period of fevered inspiration, he crafted “I never thought I would write songs, but when the injury slowed me down for a bit, I just started honing in on this specific sound with clean guitars, synthesizers, fast running bass-lines, and driving drums,” O’Brien reveals. In 2010, he formed Transitshop and issued the band’s debut EP.

Transitshop is rounded out by the fluid rhythm section of bassist Rob Felsted Jr. and drummer Derek Gallagher. The three-piece has been favorably compared to both atmospheric bands like The Cure, The Police, Crowded House, and The Cars, and more modern acts like Death Cab for Cutie, Ra Ra Riot, Tokyo Police Club, and The Bravery.  The band’s previously issued independent EP debuted at #20 on the CMJ’s Top 200 Radio Chart, and tracks from it received play from over 50 FM stations nationwide.

Transitshop’s emotionally charged live show continues to mesmerize audiences, where they’ve shared the stages with such diverse and established bands as Alkaline Trio, Walk The Moon, A Silent Film, Empires, An Horse, State Radio, and more. During the winter of 2013, Transitshop joined Candlebox on part of the multi-platinum Seattle band’s 20th anniversary tour.

Transitshop plans to tour in support of Velocity, with some shows already locked in (see tour schedule below) and more to be announced soon.

Russell Howard to release album in July

RUSSELL HOWARD TO RELEASE ALBUM IN JULY

Charlotte, NC-based singer-songwriter Russell Howard is set to release his album, City Heart +, on July 30, 2013, via Rock Ridge Music. His debut EP, City Heart, had such a positive reception that Howard is releasing it in an expanded edition as City Heart +, and the new incarnation augments the EP with freshly recorded acoustic versions of the core tracks (each acoustic version will be paired with a video) and masterfully crafted bonus cuts (“Too Far” and “Find Me”) that showcase Howard’s artistic growth.

His irresistible and intimate blend of indie, folk, and pop with a touch of honeyed 1960s soul colors the songs on the record, which address the rewards and struggles self-discovery; they shimmer with awe, melancholy, and steely optimism. “I wrote these songs at a time when I was playing colleges and traveling a lot,” says Howard. “The feeling of being far from home was setting in, but writing was really grounding. It’s like that saying ‘You play the blues to keep yourself from feeling the blues.’ I pulled myself up by writing this record.”

Reviews have praised Howard’s smart hooks and warmly confessional lyrics. Vintage Guitar Magazine says: “Howard seems to have no agenda other than writing good, tight, and trim tunes and transmitting the joy of performing them into the joy of listening.” Howard has shared the stage with such diverse and respected artists as The Lumineers, Sister Hazel, Teddy Geiger, Griffin House, Greg Laswell, Brendan James, Matt Hires, Tyrone Wells, Ari Hest, Ernie Halter, Red Wanting Blue, and Michael Tolcher. Howard plans to tour in support of City Heart +, with dates already being slotted in (see tour schedule below).

Born and raised in Dallas Texas, Howard grew up the only child of two professional symphony musicians. As a child he was immersed in classical music and played violin and sang in the school choir. In high school he began playing along to pop rock records with a ukulele, and later a guitar. By college he was regularly performing at open mics.

His most profound artistic growth has been through working with producer and, good friend, percussionist Lawson White (Norah Jones, Shakira, Santigold, Chromeo). The two met at the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado where Howard’s father has taught for 30-plus years. Howard was a kid then but the two musicians kept in touch and forged a strong personal and creative bond. Howard is currently signed to White’s production company, Good Child Music. The duo spent a year finessing the songs on the City Heart EP.

Sarah Miles to release debut album in July

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 5, 2013

SARAH MILES TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM IN JULY

On July 16, 2013, singer-songwriter Sarah Miles releases her debut full length, One (Rock Ridge Music), a sweetly sincere collection of finely crafted folk-pop inspired by the simple but bold decision to follow her heart. Miles is planning to tour in support of the new album (see full tour schedule below).

“It’s been a 3-year journey,” says Miles. “I went through love, heartbreak, moved to New York City, went on the road, and explored collaborating with other songwriters. I’ve grown so much as a person and an artist. This is the opening ceremony for me—these are the most confident songs I’ve written.”

Producer Dave Pittenger (Allison Weiss, Julia Price, Martin Rivas) imbues One with tasteful atmospherics, making the album adventurous and modern without detracting from the unique hooky concision of Miles’ songwriting style. Miles has garnered comparisons to a broad array of artists such as Mariah Carey, Sara Bareilles, Ingrid Michaelson, Diane Birch, and Carrie Underwood. She has gorgeously flowing dynamics as a singer, capable of euphoric skyward melodies and intimately fragile phrasing. Her songwriting is empowering, authentic, and stylistically touches upon folk, pop, and country. It’s an infectious blend of accessible songcraft and bold emotional candor. “I like to write songs that are relatable to everyone,” she says of the warm intimacy inherent in her songwriting.

Miles grew up in Princeton, New Jersey and has the distinction of being the youngest child ever to be admitted to NJ’s prestigious Westminster Conservatory Children’s Choir. As a member of various a cappella groups, she toured Sweden, Newfoundland, and Toronto, and performed at The White House and on the Today Show. After studying at University of Vermont, she moved to New York to pursue music fulltime. As a solo artist, her music has been featured on The Voice, and she’s toured with acclaimed singer-songwriters such as Teddy Geiger, Tony Lucca, Ingram Hill, Matt Duke, Jesse Ruben, Sister Hazel, and Pat McGee. Previously, she issued 3 EPs as Sarah Jane Wilson. For One, she co-wrote with songwriters Matt Duke, Steve Mandile (Tim McGraw, Kenny Rogers, Cliff Richard, Ronnie Dunn), Brian Cassagnol (Mieka Pauley), and Ingram Hill. Currently, she callsAustin, Texas her home.

Bracher Brown to release “Broken Glass and Railroad Tracks” in May

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 2, 2013

BRACHER BROWN TO RELEASE BROKEN GLASS AND RAILROAD TRACKS IN MAY

Orlando, FL-based performer Bracher Brown is set to release his debut album, Broken Glass and Railroad Tracks, on May 7, 2013, via Rock Ridge Music.  Brown’s poignantly poetic lyrics on relationships, personal growth, and small town living belie his teenage years. His blend of roots rock with sophisticatedly accessible hooks, teardrop guitar solos, and elegantly subtle musicality is staggeringly developed and mature for any debut, let alone a debut from someone not old enough to buy a beer.

Says Brown of the album:  “I’m really looking forward to seeing how people react to this record. A lot of time was spent writing and recording these songs and they all have a lot of meaning to me, so it should be interesting to see how these songs affect other people. I set out to make a record that would essentially look back on the past 17 years of my life, where I grew up, and the people I grew up with.”

Says Rock Ridge Music CEO Tom Derr about Brown:  “Bracher’s songwriting has grown beyond his years since we began working together, and this album is the first step in his next stage.”

His sense of creative assuredness imbues Broken Glass and Railroad Tracks with congenial authenticity.  The album was produced by acclaimed singer-songwriter Todd Carey in New York City. Brown wanted an organic production approach to the album, and Carey helped him achieve modern clarity with a vibrantly warm aesthetic.

Brown was devoted early on to his musical quest and his professional aspirations. Throughout middle school and high school, he balanced pursuing a professional music career with the constraints of being a full-time student. “During spring break, I wasn’t at the beach like everyone else, I was in the studio,” he says.  Brown was weaned on classic artists from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. “I gravitate towards a certain songwriting style that’s maybe more mature because of my taste for artists like Tom Petty and the Beatles. Had I grown up listening to pop, my music would have come out differently,” he suggests. Brown’s parents were his tastemakers—introducing him to such diverse and classic artists as Elton John, Jimi Hendrix, and The Outfield—and nurtured his creativity through supporting his journey from piano, to trumpet, to guitar, and then onto performing as a singer-songwriter.

In addition to touring nationally in 2012 with Todd Carey and Bushwalla, Brown has performed extensively in his hometown, Orlando, opening for Sister Hazel and Tony Lucca, hitting the stage at College Park Jazz Fest, and headlining shows at The Backroom.
