The Pollies To Release Not Here On September 25th

Via Single Lock/Thirty Tigers

Album produced by Ben Tanner of Alabama Shakes’ fame

and The Pollies singer and songwriter Jay Burgess

Florence, AL-based quintet The Pollies is set to release its new album, Not Here, on September 25, 2015 via Single Lock Records/Thirty Tigers.  Recorded at Dial Back Sound in Water Valley, MS, and produced by Ben Tanner (of Alabama Shakes) and The Pollies’ lead singer and songwriter, Jay Burgess, the album is the band’s first for Single Lock/Thirty Tigers and the follow-up to their 2012 release, Where The Lies Begin.  The album shows the band shedding their alt-country skin in favor of experimental noise and unadulterated risk. Not a surprise from a band that is known for defying genres and leaping over boundaries.

“When you write a song, you have a million different things you can do with that song,” lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Jay Burgess says.  “On our records, we always try to shake up the landscape. On this one, we incorporated a lot of elements that we normally wouldn’t think about using.  It changed the atmosphere of the music and pushed it in a different direction.”

Burgess hits on all the familiar topics—love, loss, regret and triumph—with an edge and ferocity that shows up on tracks like “Lost” and “Jackson.”  Simply put, these are compelling stories—and Burgess has stepped into his own as a gifted storyteller.  “Love lost is what drives the record lyrically,” Burgess says. “Some of these songs started as musical ideas—where I’d record something on my phone and then go back three or four times and make sense of the words—and other songs were just there without a lot of work.”  Throughout the record, the subject matter changes, but the themes remain:  love, loss, regret and triumph.  “The record isn’t just about losing love,” Burgess says.  “It’s about surviving the aftermath of that.”

The title of the album comes from the way Burgess felt when he wrote most of the album, like he was watching his life unfold from afar.  “I was almost living parallel to myself,” he explains.  “I watched myself react to what some people probably view as ‘normal life occurrences,’ but for me, someone who’s never been through these kinds of things, it was very difficult.”

“Lost,” a fan favorite, started as one phrase and a host of different musical ideas. “It was a song that I had sitting around with unfinished and unrealized lyrics,” Burgess says.  “I’d do multiple recordings of it with different lyrics.  One phrase I kept coming back to was, ‘I wish I was lost.’”  For weeks, that one line stayed on my notepad.  Soon after that, a friend of mine found out his marriage was falling apart.  I was someone for him to talk to, and after one of our conversations one night, the words for ‘Lost’ just fell into place.”

Another standout track, “Jackson,” came together in a much quicker fashion—with a far different focus.  “I’ve always been into revolutions—more specifically thinking about what things would be like if they hadn’t happened,” Burgess says.  “Obviously, a major movement in this country’s history was the Civil Rights movement.  I think about how long that effort took and how great the risk was, and it’s amazing to me.  I thought I had heard all of the stories that went along with the movement until I heard the story of Jimmie Lee Jackson.”

Jackson, a church deacon, was beaten and shot to death by Alabama State troopers during a peaceful voting rights march. His death was one of the inspirations for the Selma to Montgomery marches.  “At the time, there was no movie explaining him and his involvement with the Selma story,” says Burgess.  “He’s pretty much the reason Dr. King came to Selma, and I found his story inspiring in many different ways.  I had to write something about him, and frankly, I could’ve probably done an entire record on him.”

The press has been kind to The Pollies for its past music:

  • “In an ideal world, discovering a band like The Pollies wouldn’t be that big of a deal, but then again, in an ideal world, every band would be able to seamlessly blend and arrange the root elements of rock and roll while forging into new territory to create songs that sound so natural and effortless that you don’t notice the intrinsic complexity and massive undertaking that each track represents.” – Last.FM
  • “Jay Burgess’s voice is ragged enough to sound like he’s been a few places, but sweet enough to make your heart clench a little.” – No Depression
  •  “This is a band that pays more than lip service to defying genre classification, but in a way that’s organic, real, and rock ‘n’ roll.” – Twangville
  • “Welcome to the world of The Pollies – where the fenders of beauty are rusted out and the muffler fell off a while back, but oh, sweet Jesus… what a ride.” – Relix
  • “Drawing comparisons to Wilco, The Pollies continue to bolster the region’s reputation for producing great musicians.” – Paste Magazine (12 Bands to Watch from Alabama)

The Pollies is Jay Burgess (lead vocals, guitar), Reed Watson (drums), Danny Hurley (keyboard, vocals), and Spencer Duncan (bass, vocals).  The band plans to tour in support of the album; tour dates will be announced soon.

aave to release “There’s Nothing” on August 14th in digital format

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 24, 2015

aave to release There’s Nothing on August 14th in digital format

Album coming via Villain Place/Rock Ridge Music

Nashville-based post-rock quartet aave <pronounced ahh-vey> will be releasing its debut full-length, There’s Nothing, via Villain Place/Rock Ridge Music on August 14, 2015 (in the digital format only).  The creative collective specializes in sprawling psychedelic soundscapes and hypnotic musicality that evokes both bleakness and bliss, and music that is brimming with intricate ambient patterns, intriguing drum sounds, rubbery basslines, and celestial lead vocals.  aave has been favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Pink Floyd, Interpol, Warpaint, Tame Impala, and Blonde Redhead.  The album’s recently-released first single, “Going Nowhere,” has already been embraced by media.  Deli Magazine has called it a “driven powerhouse of dreamwave.”  Villain Place will release the album, with label services and support provided by Rock Ridge Music.

Says aave guitarist Lloyd Aur Norman about the partnership with Rock Ridge Music:  “We feel very fortunate to work with Rock Ridge Music. [CEO] Tom Derr and [President] Cynthia Cochrane bring years of high-level industry experience and deep knowledge of the music industry, which is invaluable for us. We’re thrilled at the opportunity.”

Says Rock Ridge Music CEO Tom Derr about working with aave and Villain Place:  “Having worked with Lloyd and Kyle [Kelly, vocals/guitar] with great expectations and rewards over the past few years on various projects, if it ain’t broke, it was obvious to work with them on this project as well.”

“We’re four people just trying to express ourselves authentically, collaboratively, and communicate our feelings to others,” says Norman about the music he makes with bandmates Kelly (vocals/guitar), Parrish (bass), and Peter Teselsky (drums).  From the beginning, aave was conceptualized to be an outlet for many levels of expression. One example of this is the band’s name, which is Finnish for ghost, and conjures the haunting and otherworldly qualities of aave’s music. Another layer is that lead singer and visual artist Kelly creates stunning visual images to accompany each track, and his breathtaking artwork is also utilized in band videos and sometimes in live shows where the band plays to projected images. “We want to be more than just a traditional live performance band,” says Parrish, “We want to take our audience places emotionally by engaging both aural and visual senses.”

There’s Nothing was written, tracked, and produced by the band at its studio, Villain Place in Nashville. Self-producing was integral to the writing process as it allowed the band to take their time building soundscapes and track when inspiration hit.  Many of the lyrics on the album were conceived as Kelly recorded them, adding to the subconscious psychedelic feel of the album.  For mixing and mastering, aave welcomed the talents of Jon Stinson (Kings of Leon / The Features) and Doug Van Sloun (First Aid Kit / Tokyo Police Club) to mix and master respectively.

The band began in 2011, as an ambient indie-rock duo (Kelly and Norman), and released its debut EP, Sleep to Forget, in 2013 to critical acclaim.  During this incarnation, the Nashville Scene praised the band, calling them “our hometown purveyors of dreamy, spacious, ambient post-rock.”  In 2013, the twosome became a foursome (adding Teselsky and Parrish), welcoming into the fold a dynamic rhythm section. This artistically expansive version of aave is featured on There’s Nothing.  The four members of aave have played together in various configurations over many years but never together on the same project until this album. As a quartet, the musicians furthered the aave artistic continuum by writing new material through collective improvisation.

Up next, the band is extending its artistic reach through using its studio and indie music business savvy to launch a boutique enterprise. Villain Place will be open as a studio for other bands, and the guys will be using their talents to give back to others through offering a menu of a la carte services such as music distribution, press campaigns, and audio and video production services. Parrish says: “It’s really meaningful to contribute and give back, and to use our band, and our knowledge, as a platform to help other musicians.”

aave is planning some tour dates around the album release which will be announced soon.

Release date:  August 14, 2015.

Jason Heath & The Greedy Souls to release new full-length album, “A Season Undone,” on September 11th

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JUNE 10, 2015

JASON HEATH AND THE GREEDY SOULS TO RELEASE
NEW FULL-LENGTH ALBUM, “A SEASON UNDONE,”
ON SEPTEMBER 11th

Band’s collaboration with Industrial Amusement partners label owner
Wayne Kramer with long-time pal Jason Heath for album’s release

Los Angeles-based band Jason Heath And The Greedy Souls will release its new album, A Season Undone, via Wayne Kramer’s Industrial Amusement label on September 11, 2015.  A Season Undone builds on the same foundation of fiery roots rock heard on their previous albums, which prompted Paste Magazine to call their first record, A Vain Hope Of Horse, “A wonderful debut: ragged, soulful, and well written.” Rock journalist Dave Marsh said of their second disc, Packed For Exile, “Jason Heath and The Greedy Souls speak to the heartache and joy in the world, with the wisdom not to try to separate them, and the skill to make all of it beautiful.”

Their music has attracted heavy hitters Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine), Wayne Kramer (MC5), and Nels Cline (Wilco) to make guest album appearances and to appear at their live shows. Heath and his fellow Greedy Souls always return the favor, both musically and by participating in their charity events.

The album’s single “Turn On (The Radio)” has the listener blazing down the road, feeling rebellious, heading to a good time with partners in crime. But that good time might be a rabble-rousing Union port closing, the local jail, or a show for the Midnight Mission on Skid Row.  In almost every track on this album, you can hear a rally cry, a call to action. “We Came To Work” bellows, “Tell me can you see the writing on the wall/Is there anyone among us who can hear that silence call/The pressure’s building at the bottom of the sea/I feel that spirit movin’ deep inside of me …We came to work to shine a light.”

That inspiration is delivered with wild accordion from Jason Federici (son of the late Danny Federici, organ/accordionist and founding member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band), standout keys from Chris Joyner (Ray Lamontagne, Tom Morello, Amos Lee), blistering guitars from Justin Salmons, and those words sung with gusto by Mr. Heath for a song that could define a genre called “Saloon Rock.” Rounding out the band are drummers Abraham Etz and Casey Johnson, Jose Esquivel and Will Mack on bass, haunting lap steel by Tobin Dale, and lush violin by Ysanne Spevack (Smashing Pumpkins, Elton John, David J). Soulful, soaring background vocals by Farayi Dominique and Laura Key elevate several of the tracks, recalling a tent revival or a Sunday service in Harlem. Every single player delivers a spirited performance.

Songs “All The Fighters” and “Evolution Now” take you right back out to the streets to join the struggles, battle cries with banjos, to remind you that through it all, “Your enemy is still your brother.” This band lives this philosophy off-stage all day, serving their brothers and sisters through wonderful organizations like The Midnight MissionJail Guitar Doors, and The Danny Fund (named for Federici’s father, Danny Federici, who passed away from melanoma).

The cover photo for A Season Undone was taken by Federici while on tour, during a jaw-dropping, tornado-spawning storm in the heart of the country. Speaking of tours, Jason Heath And The Greedy Souls plans to tour in support of the new album. Dates will be announced soon.

The Walking Guys to begin East Coast tour on July 8th; group to conduct concert tour on foot

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 8, 2015

The Walking Guys to begin East Coast tour on July 8th

Group to conduct concert tour on foot

The Walking Guys (Benjamin Butler, Christopher Kessenich, Will Stevens, and Riley Moore) are set to begin their one-of-a-kind music/adventure tour in Portland, ME on July 8, 2015, with performances that combine original music and stories of their 1600-mile walk.  Yes, walk.  The four performers plan to walk from gig to gig, sharing their music in venues ranging from highly esteemed theaters to dive bars and around campfires. Representing the best of Southern Folk Americana, the Walking Guys will create a musical experience that will allow fans to join in their adventure of covering miles every day on foot, becoming immersed in the culture of each area they enter, and sharing their story with those who will become the next characters in it.

During their journey, the Walking Guys will rely on the hospitality of strangers, acquaintances, and their camping gear to provide lodging. They will walk 15 miles a day, stopping every three to four days for rest and/or performances.  Though they currently have three solo EPs to promote, they envision themselves growing together as one cohesive unit.  Shows at the beginning of the tour will certainly vary from those at the end as the group tightens into a single act. The Guys are especially excited to document their transformation in a web series they will release along the way.  The series will allow fans to connect to the tour in (near) real-time.  Upon completion of the tour, the series will be released as a full-length documentary along with a complete live album of performances from the tour. The tour will span a four-month period, with dates in many major cities on the East Coast planned.  A short break in the walking tour will see the group traveling by car to Appleton, WI for a performance at the Mile of Music Festival in August, with the walking tour picking back up where it left off in New York City several days later. Confirmed early dates on the tour and an expected routing are included below.

Their Story

Rather than the tight-knit group one might expect to embark on a journey such as this, several members of the group have never met in person, or have known each other only for a short time.  Butler started telling his friends and family in March of 2013 that he was going to walk across the country to play music.  Not surprisingly, he was met with a barrage of, “Oh yeah?” and “Good luck, buddy,” responses.  However, he never let others’ doubts dissuade him.  He continued searching for fellow performers who were bold and skilled enough to join him.

Two years later, Butler posted, “Looking for other musicians/videographers to go on an adventurous tour with,” on a random Nashville musicians’ Facebook group.  His persistence paid off.  Kessenich just happened to peruse the page for the very first time that day.  He saw the post and gave Butler a call.  After 15 minutes of dodging the fact, Butler finally admitted he was walking the 1600+ mile East Coast tour.  Kessenich went silent for 15 long seconds then replied confidently, “I’m in.”  They met to confirm the other was not an ax murderer and began planning.

Next, Butler reached out to a lead guitarist (Stevens), whom he briefly met while walking the Appalachian Trail a year earlier.  Stevens discussed the tour with his wife who encouraged him to quit his job and join the bill.  As any good husband does, he took his wife’s advice.  Lastly, Moore, another recent friend of Butler’s, decided to join. Thus, after two years of hoping and dreaming, Butler found three relative strangers in a span of two weeks to help him turn his dream into a reality.

Kessenich will be releasing a debut EP by his band, Arts Fishing Club, just weeks before the beginning of the tour and will be extensively promoting his folk-rock brand throughout the tour. Butler will also be releasing and promoting his own recently completed debut EP filled with complex songwriting guaranteed to strike a common chord with people in all walks of life. Moore, the experienced touring musician of the group, will bring years of songwriting experience and a crucial laid-back attitude to the group needed for those consecutive days of extreme mileage. Stevens, an alumnus of Berklee College of Music and a singer-songwriter himself, will round out the group as a lead guitarist and vocalist with his own style fitting more in the Southern rock genre.

The Walking Guys are modern day beatniks, living by their mantra, “Live Simple, Spread Music.”  Their thirst for life and adventure would make Kerouac proud.

Ike Reilly to release “Born on Fire” on June 16th

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 28, 2015

Ike Reilly to release Born On Fire on June 16th

To be released on Rock Ridge Music and Tom Morello’s Firebrand Records

Summer tour to begin in Reilly’s hometown of Libertyville, IL

on June 29th, with many dates to follow

Confirmed shows July 16th & 17th at Mercury Lounge in NYC

Indie rock raconteur and singer-songwriter Ike Reilly will release his seventh studio album, Born On Fire, on June 16, 2015. The record will be issued as a joint release between Rock Ridge Music and Tom  Morello’s new label Firebrand Records. Morello who hails from the same hometown as Reilly (Libertyville, IL), says, “There’s something in the water in my hometown of Libertyville. Marlon Brando, Adam Jones of Tool, my humble self, and now Ike Reilly. Ike is not just a great, authentic songwriter of the highest caliber but he’s always ready to throw down at a union rally… or a bar fight. Ike’s songs are a poetic cracked window into the lives of the heartland heroes trying to get by, find and keep love, and carve a place for themselves with humor and dignity. But we love him most because at the drop of a hat he’ll travel 1,000 miles to play one song for a dying anti-war veteran. We are very proud to have heartland hero, Ike Reilly, on Firebrand Records.”

His first release in five years, Born On Fire features his band, the Ike Reilly Assassination, and was mostly recorded at IV Lab in Chicago, IL.  Reilly’s longtime friend and Assassination guitar player Phil Karnats (Secret Machines, Polyphonic Spree) worked with Reilly and the band on production and the result is a group of rock & roll songs that would be hard to put in a specific era.  Reilly said his hope for the record was that it sound like it could have been made “somewhere between the mid ’60s and the early 2050’s.”

In explaining the long delay between albums, Reilly cites the unfortunate loss of 15 complete recordings, and the development of a television series featuring Ike for the AMC Network kept the band out of the studio far longer than expected.  Not really common reasons for release delays but not much is really common for the former doorman and gravedigger.

David Carr from the New York Times said, “Ike Reilly is a kind of natural resource, mined from the bedrock of music. All the values that make rock important to people—storytelling, melody, rage, laughter—are part and parcel of every Ike Reilly show I have ever seen. One of the best touring acts in the country, Reilly’s band takes it as a personal challenge to upend and amaze every room they play in.”

Born On Fire features songs like “Live Like We’re Dyin’” and “Two Weeks of Work,” which reflect the influence of John Lee Hooker, Paul Butterfield, and the electric blues scene out of Chicago that influenced Ike and inspired him to start playing blues harp as a young boy. The title track, “Born On Fire,” is an anthem for anybody who has been put down, categorized, criticized, or told by some oppressor that they couldn’t be who they wanted to be or that they couldn’t do the things they wanted to do.  It’s not so much a follow-your-dream song as it is a song that says “f*ck you” to anybody who tries to bridle or limit passion in somebody else.

The songs on Born On Fire traverse R&B, punk, blues, folk, and rock & roll, with soulful singing provided by The Assassinettes, dirty Farfisa played by Barrel House Chuck, and a horn section led by sax legend Mars Williams.  Rage Against The Machine and E Street Band guitarist Morello appears on Born On Fire and rips a searing lead on Reilly’s rock & roll ballad, “Paradise Lane.”

The guest players like Morello certainly add color and breadth to Born On Fire, but the real soul of these songs is provided by The Assassination itself.  The IRA is:  drummer Dave Cottini, bassist Pete Cimbalo, guitarists Phil Karnats, and Tommy O’Donnell and Adam Krier on organ and guitar.  The record has a “live” feel that only a band that has been ridden hard could pull off.  Born On Fire captures a songwriter at his best, and a band that was nimble enough to serve a diverse group of songs that require both recklessness and finesse.

Press praise has been extensive over the years.  Chicago Magazine praised Reilly’s “outlandish storytelling, underdog combativeness, and slapstick humor,” Cincinnati City Beat lauded the “scuffed and noir-ish tales of modern life. …fusing dirty R&B grooves into his swaggering Pop/Roots sound… Ike Reilly’s most amazing accomplishment over the past decade is that every new album is his best ever and yet the new one in no way ever diminishes the greatness of his existing catalog.”  Stereo Subversion called Reilly a “genre-bending journeyman” and a “rough-around-the-edges Americana troubadour.”  And The Big Takeover appreciated Reilly’s “wordy but focused storytelling in his lyrics, his rock & roll sneer and his rough-edged folk rock sound.”

Minneapolis City Pages said, “Equal parts punk rocker, poet, and blue-collar barfly, Reilly’s stories are as bizarre and filthy and honest and pure as the people who come out to his shows. His songs reach out and grab people, shake them by the collars, make them jump up and down.”  Chicago Tribune admired that Ike “merges his affinity for folk-punk narrative and anthemic guitar chords with hip-hop’s vocal cadences and rhythmic drive.”  Philadelphia Inquirer enjoyed his “street-poet swagger, audacious humor, and industrial-strength hooks.”  PopMatters.com called him “the best songwriter in America… Hilarious, unsettling, raw… but mostly just rocking.” USA Today hailed Reilly as “never less than original… ferociously intelligent… always worth listening to.” And Los Angeles Times described Reilly’s music as “…barroom rock narrated by a wiseguy who’s as comfortable regaling PhDs and poets as he is pimps and porn stars.”

Moonsville Collective to hit the road in June; new album forthcoming in 2015

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 6, 2015

MOONSVILLE COLLECTIVE TO HIT THE ROAD IN JUNE

New album forthcoming in 2015

Orange County/Los Angeles-based Americana string band Moonsville Collective, known for its traditional mix of old time, folk, country, bluegrass, and rhythm and blues, has announced tour dates this summer (see full tour schedule below).  The band will also be releasing a new album in 2015, with a street date to be announced soon.  They recorded the forthcoming self-produced album at Ear Witness Studios in Whittier, CA, with Sam Knaak engineering it.  Already, the band has been playing a number of the songs on the album live, with fan favorites “Blue Money Grove,” “End of the Line,” and “Rollin’ in Paradise” slated to be on the record.

“We’ve gotten into a deeper, more personal songwriting side of things on the new album,” double bass player Seth Richardson says. “The lyrics reflect a much more personal approach than any of our past songs have had.”  As with any collective, the line-up sometimes shifts, but Richardson says the core band—including himself, Ryan Welch, Corey Adams (vocals/tenor banjo/guitar), Drew Martin (percussion), Matthew McQueen (mandolin), “Dobro Dan” Richardson (slide/resonator/dobro), and Sean Kibler (fiddle)—is the lineup that worked on the forthcoming album in the studio.

Moonsville Collective has become an integral part of both the California surf and motorcycle cultures. With their tag line “California Goodtime” a perfect pairing with many apparel and outdoor brands, twice the band has taken part in the Outdoor Retailer Convention hosted annually in Salt Lake City, Utah, and has collaborated with and played at parties/events for brands such as HippyTree, Jansport, Matix, Iron & Resin, and Sanuk.

Moonsville Collective formed in August of 2011 and hit the ground running, playing some 250 shows throughout California, Nevada, and Utah in the two years following. Their heavy schedule allowed for them to quickly refine their craft and solidify their family mentality, which has been essential to the success of the group. They are often spoken of as embracing the sensibilities of folk legends Levon Helm (of The Band) and Bob Dylan, the high energy of Old Crow Medicine Show, and clever lyrics like those of Hank Williams and Huddy “Ledbelly” Ledbetter. Their hard work has not gone unnoticed by the local industry, and Moonsville Collective has been awarded “2013 Best Country/Americana Band” by the OC Music Awards, “2012 Best Live Band” by OC Weekly, and named “Best Bluegrass/Americana Band in Orange County” by CBS Los Angeles.  Via their label Rock Ridge Music, in November of last year Moonsville Collective released a reissue of the band’s 2013 album, Cradle to the Grave, paired with a live EP (originally known as the Salamander Sessions) which featured covers.

Moonsville Collective has shared the stage with acts such as Willie Watson (Old Crow Medicine Show), Donavan Frankenreiter, The White Buffalo, Wanda Jackson, Frank Fairfield, Rose’s Pawn Shop, Sean & Zander, Grace & Tony, Humming House, and The Dustbowl Revival. They have been asked to headline many of the large local festivals for the cities of Long Beach, Irvine and Costa Mesa.  The band plans to tour heavily throughout 2015 in support of the forthcoming album as well.

The Damnwells’ new album debuts at #6 on Billboard Heatseekers chart

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 22, 2015

The Damnwells’ New Album Debuts at #6 on Billboard Heatseekers Chart

Tour to kick off in May

Indie rock band The Damnwells released their self-titled album on April 14th, and they’ve entered the Billboard Heatseekers Chart at #6.  The Damnwells will kick off their tour in support of their new album in May (see below for full list of upcoming tour dates).  The Damnwells is the first album since 2006 to include the original band lineup.  (The original members of The Damnwells are Alex Dezen [lead vocals, guitar, piano], David Chernis [lead guitar], Ted Hudson [bass], and Steven Terry [drums/percussion].)  The album, which boasts a breathless, unapologetic, sonic rapidfire of 11 new tracks, was released via Rock Ridge Music and has been garnering press praise:

  • “It may be their best yet.” – Uncut, 8 out of 10 stars
  • The Damnwells sounds like it was self-titled for an excellent reason – without sounding like it struggles to recapture past glories, this album is a potent reminder of the virtues this band had from the start, seasoned with the experiences of almost 15 years, and it’s a welcome and satisfying return to form.” – AllMusic.com
  • “…some (ahem) damn fine songs. …Dezen has always had a gift for luring the listener in with sweetly hummable arrangements that add a spoonful of sugar to the fraught conditions his songs’ protagonists tend to find themselves facing. Perhaps more than any other songwriter of his generation, he traffics in poetry while still understanding the power of a lyric that surveys emotional wreckage with a reporter’s eye, bringing the listener the facts of the situation instead of hiding behind excuses or recrimination. …But there’s no bitterness here, just a clear-eyed willingness to accept life as it is and a determination to carry on — all woven into some of the wisest and most addictively tuneful songs you’re liable to have the privilege of listening to all year.” – Diffuser.fm
  • The Damnwells echoes the sound of a group that’s finally emerged victorious. One can only hope that the band – now reconvened and seemingly more determined than ever – can hopefully go forward and produce more albums as sturdy and as stunning as this. Fans of the band and new converts alike should certainly hold on to hopes that they will.” – PopMatters.com
  • “The Damnwells are one of the best bands in the world… Since 2000, this Brooklyn outfit has walked a line between power pop and roots rock with aplomb (with a trace or two of The Replacements thrown in for good measure). They pen songs that attach themselves to your brain through catchy choruses, and then kick your lights out with devastating lyrics. Rarely are break-up albums this complicated, stark, or unrelenting in their portrait of love gone awry; rarely can songwriters offer so many thought-provoking doses of reality within the confines of instantly memorable melodies…” – Absolute Punk
  • “…the Damnwells remain capable of making pop-rock magic…” – Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
  • “Comparing this self-titled effort to their older records would not do either justice. The Damnwells is a masterful combination of good taste and experience that only comes with time… an honest and forthright account of a man’s good and bad days…” – Under The Gun Review
  • “…a helluva record.  …this latest batch of songs is imbued not only with [Dezen’s] trademark wit and eye for human detail but also feel personal in a way that make his previous songs feel more like character sketches.  Dezen and his reunited band of brothers know how to break your heart in exactly the right way.” – Color Is Its Own Reward

In addition to releasing five studio albums (two as the duo of Dezen and Hudson), the band has shared the stage with the Fray, the Dixie Chicks, Old 97s, Cheap Trick, and Bob Dylan, among others. They were also the subject of a critically acclaimed documentary, “Golden Days.”

Callaghan releases video for “Crazy Beautiful Life,” featured on Billboard.com, house concert tour dates

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 1, 2015

Callaghan releases video for “Crazy Beautiful Life,”

featured on Billboard.com

“Callaghan: All Four Corners” U.S. house concert tour kicks off in May

Going for adds at Triple A in April,

song “Best Year 2015” in rotation on BBC Radio 2 in U.K.

Nashville based singer/songwriter Callaghan has just released the video for “Crazy Beautiful Life, the first single from her second album, A History of Now.  The video can be viewed here:  “Crazy Beautiful Life.”  “Crazy Beautiful Life” goes for adds at Triple A radio in the U.S. on April 6th.   Her first U.K. single from the album, “Best Year 2015,” is currently in rotation on BBC Radio 2 there.  Billboard has thrown its support behind the release with an online feature about the new album and Callaghan’s upcoming epic house concert tour.

Callaghan is currently on tour promoting A History of Now, which will be released on April 7, 2015, via her own label, Green Town Music.  Featuring Callaghan’s trademark acoustic pop sound, which blurs the edges between pop, adult contemporary and Americana, the new record is the latest chapter of a success story based on hard work and a strong connection with a growing army of fans for the artist who moved to the U.S. from London in the summer of 2010.  No Depression has dubbed her “nothing short of stunning,” while BBC Radio 2 presenter Bob Harris called Callaghan “a wonderful artist… hugely talented.”

In addition to planned shows at regular venues, Callaghan will be hitting the road in May and June for her third annual house concert tour.  This year’s tour is billed as “Callaghan Across America: All Four Corners,” and will travel from Tampa to New York, across to Seattle, down to San Diego and back to Nashville.  (See tour schedule below for all confirmed dates.)  Her very first house show tour — which stretched from coast-to-coast in 2013 — earned Callaghan a four-page spread in Billboard Magazine. The magazine credited her with “helping reshape the business of touring, if not music consumption entirely,” and praised her for her strong vocals and do-it-yourself work ethic.

A History of Now was recorded in Nashville with producer Dennis Matkosky (a songwriting legend whose credits include Keith Urban’s “You’ll Think of Me” and the Flashdance soundtrack’s “Maniac,” as well as several co-writes on the Callaghan album) and features contributions from some of Nashville’s best session players as well as loops from Owl City member Casey Brown, adding a modern edge to the album’s analog vibe. Callaghan recently inked a publishing deal with Matkosky’s Kompass Publishing, which is affiliated with Kobalt Music.

Says AXS.com of Callaghan and her forthcoming album:  “Callaghan is a magical artist who can sparkle like a brightly colored gem that turns your day golden, or she can reach the deep, guarded core of your soul and bring you to cleansing tears of quiet reflection.  …Callaghan has such a firm understanding of the ways of the heart that she can take a private, diary moment and render it with such a broad, compassionate stroke that it truly becomes universal in scope. Even her most personal musings speak directly to her listeners with such clarity and precision that the songs can take on unique and very personal meanings to each and every person who hears them.”

Since moving to the U.S. to record her debut album, Life in Full Colour, with Atlanta singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins (who says Callaghan has “a voice the whole world needs to hear”), Callaghan has enjoyed four years of touring, recording and growing appreciation in the U.S. She’s transformed from a burgeoning indie songwriter to a full-fledged headliner who’s toured across 46 states, played the Cayamo Cruise, shared the stage with artists such as Mullins, Jake Shimabukuro, Ed Kowalczyk and more, headlined at packed venues around the country, and logged more than 50,000 highway miles per year.  Now that she has enjoyed success in the U.S., Callaghan is also focusing her promotion and touring efforts across the pond in 2015. She was recently featured in the BBC TV documentary “Bob Harris: My Nashville” and will tour the UK later this month.

The Damnwells Add New Dates to Tour

Indie rock band The Damnwells, who are set to release a new, self-titled album on April 14, 2015 (via Rock Ridge Music), have just added some additional dates to their planned tour, including three dates in California and three dates in Texas in June.  (See tour schedule below.)

The Damnwells Tour Schedule:

5/8 – New York, NY / Irving Plaza (ticket link)

5/10 – Atlanta, GA / Shaky Knees Festival (ticket link)

5/14 – St. Louis, MO / The Firebird (ticket link)

5/15 – Chicago, IL / Double Door (ticket link)

5/16 – St. Paul, MN / Turf Club (ticket link)

6/4 – Austin, TX / Red 7 (ticket link)

6/5 – Houston, TX / Fitzgerald’s Downstairs (ticket link)

6/6 – Dallas, TX / Gas Monkey (ticket link)

6/12 – San Francisco, CA / Brick and Mortar (ticket link)

6/13 – West Hollywood, CA / Roxy (ticket link)

6/14 – San Diego, CA / Voodoo Room at House of Blues (ticket link)

6/26 – Washington, DC / Howard Theatre (ticket link)

6/27 – Boston, MA / Brighton Music Hall (ticket link)

The Damnwells will be touring in support of their forthcoming album, which is the first album since 2006 to include the original band lineup.  (The original members of The Damnwells are Alex Dezen [lead vocals, guitar, piano], David Chernis [lead guitar], Ted Hudson [bass], and Steven Terry [drums/percussion].)  The album boasts a breathless, unapologetic, sonic rapidfire of 11 new tracks.  There’s the quintessential Dezen harbingers (towel-snapping wit, unexpected bridges, surprise chorus changeups) and Chernis (“the Furnace”) Jazzmaster/Supro swaths. Terry barely flinches while knocking out the beat so hard you can’t help but feel it. Hudson’s P-bass reins everyone in. But smacked squarely alongside all this familiar is an undefined “aha,” the kind that makes you want to turn it up way past 10.

“The magic is the four of us,” states Dezen.  “It really is.  The songs are just words and music. Without Ted, Steve and Dave, it’s just not the same.” Although, having spent the past few years crafting words and music for a handful of well-knowns (Justin Bieber, The Dixie Chicks, Dave Grohl, the Jayhawks’ Gary Louris, Jason Derulo, Christina Perri, and Company of Thieves’ Genevieve Schatz, to name a few), it’s fair to say Dezen conjured up some pixie dust of his own.

Whether it’s the playful, horn-flecked jaunt of “Heavy Heart” or the sodden, anthemic ache of “Lost,” the magic of this new batch of Damnwells tunes elbows Dezen and company into wondrously uncharted — and decidedly cinematic — territory, all the way. Think “Wreck You”’s Petty-tinged stomp under Downey-Jr.-esque bad boy lyrics. Or “Too Old to Die Young”’s boy-as-“Girl, Interrupted” cloaked in “Being There”-era Wilco flounce. Even “She Goes Down” brushes ever so slightly up against Suzanne Vega (“Luka”) à la “Taxi Driver”’s Iris

And the magic-touch goes on. “Money and Shiny Things,” “Kentexas,” “The Girl That’s Not in Love with You,” “Kill Me,” “This Ship of Ours,” “None of These Things.” Fun, straight-ahead, clever but not too… songs you can see yourself in, no matter how far-fetched. More importantly, songs the Damnwells see themselves in, together.  “I tend to write ballad-esque songs,” says Dezen. “The guys give them a new perspective — they give them heat.” And that’s the difference: the Damnwellian dichotomy of sentiment and grit.

In addition to releasing five studio albums (two as the duo of Dezen and Hudson), the Damnwells have shared the stage with the Fray, the Dixie Chicks, Old 97s, Cheap Trick, and Bob Dylan, among others. They were also the subject of a critically acclaimed documentary, “Golden Days.”
